Double-Whammy
I saw two great news articles not too long ago. Both involved health and the human body. No, don't turn away! It's important. First of all, lets begin with this article (reference, foo). It seems that video gamers of today no longer have to live in fear of losing their hands. Doctors in Valencia have successfully managed to replace a woman's hands. Let me repeat that for you, they replaced her hands! Both her hands were amputated previously, but she is just now getting new ones. There must be a waiting list, but it's probably not as long as waiting for a Wii.
In other news, it seems that television can be something of a painkiller (Mr. Reference). Scientists in Italy ran a study with a group of children where they drew blood from them. They were divided in to three groups. One group was ostricised, and presumably left for dead in the wilderness somewhere. The second group got to stay with their mothers, where they probably received nothing more than cooes and shushes from them. The last group got to watch cartoons. The article was not clear on exactly what cartoons, but I can only assume it was something good like, I dunno, Swat Kats or something. Do they even show that anymore? Geez. Anyway, it seems that the children who got to watch cartoons felt less pain than any of the other kids. Now the scientists are trying their hardest to send the message saying, "oh, don't pay us any heed. We do not recommend placing your kid in front of a TV for hours at a time. Seriously, don't do it!" Ah well, those are scientists for you.
